Konpa SanLimit Dance Company is dedicated to teaching Konpa, a traditional Haitian dance known for its smooth rhythm and intimate partner connection. We create a space where students not only learn steps but also understand the cultural meaning behind the movement. Our mission is to build confidence, connection, and community through dance.

KONPA FUNDAMENTALS
Master the Fundamentals of Konpa
Steps
Feel the rhythm, master the movement.
Konpa steps are built on a smooth, grounded rhythm that emphasizes control, flow, and musical interpretation. The movement is not about complexity but about precision and consistency, where weight transfer, timing, and body alignment work together to create effortless motion. Dancers learn how to stay relaxed while maintaining structure, allowing the hips, feet, and upper body to move naturally with the beat. Mastery of these steps creates the foundation needed for both solo expression and partner dancing.

Partner Connection
Two bodies, one rhythm.
Partner connection in Konpa relies on communication through frame, posture, and subtle body signals rather than force or rigid leading. The dance requires both partners to stay relaxed yet responsive, maintaining consistent contact and shared timing throughout the movement. Leaders guide direction and flow through gentle pressure and body positioning, while followers interpret cues through balance and sensitivity. This creates a continuous exchange that allows both dancers to move as one unit while still maintaining individual expression.

Community & Haitian Culture
Dance that carries a culture, a story, a people.
Konpa originates from Haiti and reflects a deep cultural identity shaped by music, social gatherings, and community expression. The dance is closely tied to Konpa music, which blends rhythmic guitar, percussion, and melodic patterns that encourage smooth, continuous movement. Within Haitian culture, Konpa serves as both a social connector and a form of storytelling, often performed at celebrations, parties, and community events. The dance continues to evolve globally while maintaining its roots in Haitian heritage, preserving its identity as a symbol of unity, pride, and cultural expression.
